How To Care For Your Australian Sheepskin Rug

Here, at Eagle Wools, we love our beautiful range of sheepskin rugs. They’re a perfect way of adding a touch of luxury, depth and texture to your home (and they’re very comfortable and snuggly too!) These rugs are so versatile! You can use them on sofas, beds, armchairs and, of course, floors. Sheepskin rugs are one soft home furnishing that never dates, so once you buy one, you’ll want to make sure you take great care of it.

Give It A Good Brush

To make sure your sheepskin Perth rug is as clean and debris-free as possible, give it a regular brush. It’s best to use one of those metal bristle brushes for this. You’ll find a good one in most pet shops.

Avoid Exposure To Direct Sunlight

Your rug can easily lose its colour when it’s left sitting in direct sunlight for too long. With this in mind, place your rug away from windows and try not to leave it in your conservatory or sunroom to keep your rug looking its best.

Spot Clean Your Rug

In the event of any accidental spills or stains, break out your spot-cleaning kit! All you need is some warm water, a cloth and some diluted sheepskin shampoo. Rather than scrubbing away at the stain, gently dab it until it’s removed. You can then just let it dry naturally but remember to keep it in the shade rather than in strong, direct sunlight! We also don’t recommend that you leave your rug on or near a radiator to dry. It takes time for sheepskin to fully dry out and it needs circulating air to do this. It’s also a good idea to give your rug a little brush after the spot clean to help the air to get to it even more!

Don’t Panic If Your Rug Is Heavily Stained

Life isn’t always perfect so if you end up with a heavily stained rug that just can’t be spot cleaned, you can always give your sheepskin a full wash. First, you need to give it a quick brush. Then you can either hand wash your rug in the bath or pop it into the machine at a low temperature on a wool cycle.

If you’re hand washing it, fill the bath with tepid water and either baby shampoo or a purpose-made sheepskin shampoo. Then, put your rug in and gently swirl the water without scrubbing. Wait a few minutes, then drain and refill the bath with clean water. Repeat these steps until your rug is clean then leave it out to dry in the shade. This process works best on fairly new rugs. Old ones may not survive the process, unfortunately!

You Can Always Get Your Rug Dry Cleaned

If you’ve tried all of the above and you still can’t shift any stains, take your rug to the dry cleaners who should be able to help.
